Twitter Reacts to Oden’s Season-Ending Injury

Greg Oden’s potentially season-ending knee injury made me more depressed than the trailer for “Brothers,” so I went to the Twitterverse to see if the rest of the world felt the same way.

For the most part they did.

There were a lot of “I feel sorry for Greg Oden” tweets. Many of them were along the lines of this one, from bumblebeenie:

Every time I see footage of Greg Odens injury from last night I get sad. I love Oden, the gentle goofy giant! Poor guy :(

Others had more of a “hey, you’re ruining my fantasy team” vibe. Can’t say I blame them, but really? You thought Greg Oden’s 11 points, 8 rebounds and 2.5 blocks was going to carry you to a fantasy championship?

Some people went for comedy and came up short. This one from alanpdx was pretty good though:

Oden is working to become a leg-end in his own time.

A leg-end. That killed me. Sorry, Greg. You have to admit that was funny though.

There were quite a few “this settles it, Portland screwed up in the 2007 draft” tweets. Not to mention the requisite “hey, look, it’s Sam Bowie the sequel!” tweets. There’s truth in both statements, but didn’t Kevin Durant winning Rookie of the Year and maturing into a borderline superstar last season already cement that ideology?

I guess not.

Another common theme? The Twitterverse views Bill Simmons as the go-to guy for all things Oden. There were multiple appeals to @sportsguy33 for analysis and jokes in the aftermath of the injury. Like this one. And this one.

So far Simmons has obliged only with an appeal of his own — to @injuryexpert — for more info on a fractured patella tendon.

George Hill of the Spurs showed support for his buddy Oden with a request for prayers; a classy gesture from a guy we’ve come to expect nothing less from.

My favorite Greg Oden-related tweet came from Tony Moneta, though, a random dude from Portland/Boston:

getting drunk so i can research and write papers all day… and mourn for Greg… rocking my Oden shirt today

Me too, Tony. Me too.

This Guinness is for you, Greg.
