McGrady Shows Some Fight

Critics have had a lot of ammo for T-Mac in 2008, but he's not backing down.

Mired in one of the worst seasons of his career, Tracy McGrady is showing some resiliency. Aware of the current negative attention that his play is garnering, McGrady struck back yesterday in comments made to the Houston Chronicle.

“I criticize myself,” McGrady said Monday. “I can take it from anybody, from everybody. I know my ability. And when I do get right, all that … is put to rest. So kick me when I’m down, because I swear to you, I’ll be back up. And when I get back up, I’m going to sit back, and I’m going to laugh, man, because I’m going to have the last laugh.

At age 29, McGrady is currently having his worst statistical season since 1998-99, his second year in the league. A recurring knee injury has limited him to 26 games this season. Even when he does play, the injury is obviously still bothering him. McGrady is shooting a career-low 39% from the field and averaging just 15 points per game.

Despite the injury and the ridicule, it’s good to see that  T-Mac still has the competitive fire of a top-tier player. He may have Andre Iguodala-like stats this season, but McGrady’s attitude is still strictly Kobe-level confidence.

It seems as if he will be hampered by injuries for the rest of the season, but next year I predict that he’ll play like a man possessed.
