January 1, 2009 - An Interview with Jamar Wall
Jamar Wall is a terrific junior defensive back for the Texas Tech Red Raiders. Wall recorded 122 tackles and 7 interceptions for the Red Raiders this season. His defensive skills contributed to an 11-1 regular season finish for Texas Tech and a berth into the Cotton Bowl to face Ole Miss. Wall is also the primary kick returner for Texas Tech. Aaron Fischman interviewed Wall before the game, we hope you enjoy his insight.
Having interviewed with us last year during Bowl Season, Wall is a loyal friend of The Deli. Be sure to watch him and the Red Raiders take on Ole Miss in the Cotton Bowl on January 2 at 2:00 p.m. ET on Fox.
Aaron Fischman: How exciting was the Texas game? You guys beat the #1 team in the nation (at the time) in the final second of the game.
Jamar Wall: the Texas game was crunk, extremely exciting. Lots of adrenaline all over the stadium. We just made routine plays and came out with the victory.
AF: Discuss the emotions you had after Oklahoma’s victory effectively ended the team’s title hopes? Speaking of Oklahoma, do you think they’ll beat the Florida Gators in the BCS title game?
JW: After that game, everyone was shocked. I mean, we did it to them last year and they did it to us this year. We knew it was going to be a tough game but we didn't expect it to be that way. It was was heart-breaking.
AF: This year you became the team’s primary kick returner. What has that been like?
JW: Being the main return guy was something I had asked to be since I got here. I finally got my wish, so I will do my best every time.
AF: In your time at Texas Tech so far, which quarterback are you most proud of intercepting?
JW: Graham Harrell. I give everyone else their respect, but I personally think he is the best QB I will face in college football.
AF:. Though still a predominantly passing team, the Red Raiders run more often than they did last year. What, if any, impact does that have on Graham Harrell and the passing game?
JW: Running the way we do now has made teams honor all dimensions of our offense because now not only do they have to defend our pass game but the running game [too].
AF: For those who have not seen Michael Crabtree play in person, please describe his amazing football skills. What kind of a guy is he off the field?
JW: Crabtree is an unbelievable athlete. He is fast, strong, and decisive. He is so good at using his large frame and making his routes all look the same. I don't really hang with him off the field, so I wouldn't know that really.
AF: What has Graham Harrell meant to this football program in his 4-year Texas Tech career?
JW: Graham Harrell has made an big impact our our program and community. he handles his busin ess on and off the field.
AF: Talk about your big interception in the overtime win over Nebraska.
JW: The play that I made during that game was just a routine play. I am supposed to make plays like that. I was at the right place at the right time.
AF: What can you tell us about your bowl game opponent, Ole Miss? How does the defense plan to attack Jevan Snead’s passing attack?
JW: Jevon is a great QB. I faced him in high school my senior year. I know he has become a much better QB and he is the leader of his team. We won't do anything different from the past games.
AF: Is there any added motivation in trying to prove that your team deserved to play in a BCS bowl game? Why or why not?
JW: No, not really because nothing can be changed now. We are going to prove to everyone, and ourselves, that we are a great team. So we will be taking our respect.
AF: Who most deserved to win the Heisman this season?
JW: If the heisman is an award given out to the best athlete, going off of stats and how they played this year, then Graham Harrell should have easily won the Heisman. It's really just a political thing to me and if a certain group of people like you or not. That's just my opinion.
