October 2, 2008 - The Deuce Is Back
Hey, party people. We have officially entered October. Can this be true? The seasons are changing like a kid near a pool on a hot day. Fast. The punch line was, you know, 'cause he wants to get in the - oh, forget it.
Look, the three pickups of the week!
1.
Moore Fills the Void in New Orleans
Lance Moore was tied with the 14th-most looks for a receiver last week. Moore had 10 balls thrown his way against the Niners.
Ok, let's think about this. How many teams are there in your fantasy league? Enough that Lance Moore should be on a roster, right? But that's the good part; because Moore flies under the radar, he probably isn't on a roster yet. With 7 catches in each of the last two weeks (for a combined 179 yards and 2 TDs), Moore is looking like he is ready to be your hero on Monday night versus the Vikings.
Saints quarterback Drew Brees is averaging 335 yards per game. With Jeremy Shockey and Marques Colston out for the Saints' next game, Moore will light it up against a Minnesota defense that has allowed over 200 passing yards per game this season. Moore won't be as valuable once the team is healthy. But right now he looks like a steal.
2.
Hide the Women and Children, Deuce is Back
No fantasy update this week would be complete without a shout out to Deuce McAllister. Welcome back Deuce!
Keep in mind that this is a fragile guy who played in three games in 2007 and only five in 2005. With that said, Deuce looks like a good pick-up this week. Reggie Bush is clearly the better option to catch passes out of the backfield. But the downside of Bush's game is that he just can't grind it out down the middle like the strongest backs in the league.
Enter the Deuce! He's 30 pounds heavier than Bush and while he's not exactly a spring chicken, Deuce came back to fantasy relevance last week with 20 rushes for 73 yards, a touchdown and a catch for 10 yards. Obviously this spells bad things for Bush owners. 20 carries per week is no joke.
Brees will bring the pain from the sky. So defenses will lighten up at the line and give McAllister the opportunity to get some good plays in. Don't expect much from Deuce this week against a very good Minnesota run defense. But against Oakland, Carolina and San Diego, Deuce can have great games. Those teams have all allowed at least 100 yards on the ground per game this season. Also, look for a lot of TDs from New Orleans' favorite power back, since Deuce will be the back in goal line situations.
3. Who's the Man in Houston?
Keep your eyes on the Houston RB situation. Steve Slaton is listed as first in the depth chart. Slaton had over 100 yards rushing a TD two weeks ago, but he could only muster 33 yards on the ground on 10 carries last week. Luckily for him he also caught 8 passes for 83 yards and a receiving TD.
Houston has already had its bye week and this week they are facing an Indy defense that has allowed an average of 199 yards rushing per game. Yikes!
In other words, Slaton will have a nice game this Sunday. Who knows? Maybe he'll even stay good all season and you can have a smile on your face because you grabbed him early. Unlike the Texans fans. They don't have a whole lot to smile about this season. You know, 'cause they're 0-3...
Alright. All these bad jokes have worn me out. Back to the stat sheet where I belong.
As we head into Week 5, don't let that guy at the office fool you. You ARE a good fantasy owner. Make some pick-ups, take the reigns and come back for more next week. Until then, good luck and God speed.
